For those of you who could not be in class on Wednesday, we watched the Twilight Zone episode "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street." The links for youtube no longer work, but I found copies of the episode that you can try below. The episode isn't that long, but definitely a good one, and certainly one of my favorites. :)
Think about how what this episode reveals about human nature, and how it relates to what we have been studying so far.
Rod Serling closes with the following quote.
“The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all its own for the children, and the children yet unborn.”
On your own blog, or as a comment below, consider: What do you think Serling is saying? Based on what we have studied so far do you agree with this statement? Be sure to support your answer with evidence from literature, history, personal experience, etc.
